My first group project in the University of Portsmouth! I've been working on character designs, the first I focus on is the woman, the wife of the man in the story. Aiming to produce an elegant, refine, pure yet ghostly, while staying clean and simple.
early sketches :
Second, I worked on the Water dragon, Mizuchi. I tried to aim for the Kabuki Mask theme as suggested by my team, inspired after the No face character from Ghibli Studio's Animation movie 'Spirited Away'.
Early sketches:
Focusing on asian-style dragon mask, designing faces with big eyes, creepy and scary but also aim to look majestic and divine.
Color test :
The first color palette tested out for the dragon, making sure the color suits it's mystical form as it's body is designed to be a huge form of water instead of flesh and bone.
Lastly, I worked on the Man character, husband to the woman in the story who went out to hunt down the Water Dragon. He was a difficult one to design as I'm not use to drawing skinny, worn-out looking characters. He is suppose to be either a farmer or a fisher man, so with some discussion with the group, several ideas were drawn out.
Early sketches :
The aim is to draw a man who looks older and more worn-out then the woman character, giving a contrasting match between this couple instead of giving the perfect young man and woman match.
Aside from the characters, I've also worked on some props from the story such as the mini pagoda lantern on the water, some paper lanterns designed base on the ancient feudal era of Japan, and the boat which the man would be standing on.
Several discussions were made whether the props designed in these pictures would either fit in the story, hope to discover the best among the rest.
