CT5ANIGP GROUP ANIMATION : “A DRAGON WAKES AT DUSK” WEEK 7

On week 7, as discussions with my group went on, more changes were made for the rough animatic. I worked on the fourth rough animatic, referring to the work done in week 6 : second version of the storyboard and third rough animatic.

Changes are :

- The Fly starts flying in down vertically before flying horizontally to the boat at 0:02
- A side close up on the Man reacting at 0:16
-  A close up view of the Man reacting to the ripple on the water as he looks down at 0:23
- The camera angle changed for the Dragon as it moves from the left side of the screen and moving up at 0:40
- The distance of the Dragon is further away from the land at 0:46
- The Dragon moves to the direction of the Woman while the Man reacts at 0:51
- A front close up view of the Woman reacting at : 0:53
- A side view of the Woman dropping her lantern as the head of the Dragon appears at the right side of the screen, approaching her at 0:54

Fourth complete rough animatic:

After reviewing the fourth rough animatic with my group, we decided that more changes need to be done. Immediately, I went straight to working on the Version 3 storyboard, re-editing the ideas.

Changes are :

-  A close up view of the Man looking at his surroundings at 0:11
- A quick shot of the Dragon approaching forward to the camera towards the direction of the Woman at 0:57
- A quick close up shot of the lantern falling into the water at 0:59
- A close camera shot looking downwards while zooming away on the man as he throws his spear at 1:00
- A quick cut between the spear flying across the screen above, cutting towards the Dragon slowly turning it's head, and cutting back to the spear flying downwards before cutting back to the dragon completely turning it's head at 1:01 - 1:03
- A shot of the water with the Jade bracelet sinking in at 1:07

Storyboard version 3 :

After working on the storyboard, I quickly went to work on testing one of the ideas on the man throwing the spear. Focusing on giving a fast reaction in the audience's view, camera angle set on a close up shot looking downwards on the man.

Right after completing the test, I went straight to completing the fifth rough animatic.

Fifth rough animatic :

As I discussed with my group on our position as animators, I was chosen to be the lead artist and animator for the Woman character. I worked on finalizing the character concept art for the woman. Completing her full body concept art with color palette at the bottom panels,  making sure to choose colors that represents her gentle, youthful nature, in contrast with the Man character.

For her facial expressions, I drew only expressions that will be used in the animation, such as sadness, fear, relief, worry, shock.

After, I worked on poses that may be used for the animation, such as running, sitting on the floor (possibly from falling), searching, and also a downward view of the woman from a high angle (point of view for the Dragon).

Lastly, a full body breakdown drawing for the woman.

By the end of the week, I worked on coloring the characters as a proof of concept. Focusing on the tones and lighting that may be used for the complete animatic, making sure the light from the lantern travels across the character's form as accurate as possible.

CT5ANIGP GROUP ANIMATION : “A DRAGON WAKES AT DUSK” WEEK 5

On week 5, I work on drawing the structure of the man's head.
At first it wasn't easy to capture the shape of a skinny, bone-like structure of a worn out fisherman, but as I kept working on it, I've manage to get a bit further then my usual style.

After, I start working on skin tones and colors for the man, especially with the part on lights traveling across his face.

As I had some discussions with my group about the Man's position in the boat, I decided to work on poses that the man would make while on the boat.

After working on the man character, I move on to work on the color of the dragon, as a water creature made of nothing but water, I've tried testing the idea of what color can be used to animate but I realize the choices I made later on would make it difficult for the animation process.

After working on the dragon, I start working on several different poses for the Woman as well as her facial expressions.

Aside from the woman, I kept working on drawing the head structure of the man and facial expressions on the dragon.

Lastly, I worked on some rough animatic test for the Man and the Dragon characters:

First rough animatic test : the Dragon's attack.

Second rough animatic test : the Dragon and the Man's movement.

Third rough animatic test : the Dragon's movement.

Forth rough animatic test : Dragon getting distracted.

Fifth rough animatic test : the Man throwing his spear.

Sixth rough animatic test : the spear's point of view.

Seventh rough animatic test : the Man's expression

After having a discussion with my group, I went straight to working on the whole rough animatic.

The first completed rough animatic.

After reviewing the video with my group, several changes were made for the rough animatic :

The second complete rough animatic.

This last rough animatic of the week was a combination of ideas between me and my group leader, Victor Zim.
